1981, PhD, Experimental Psychology, University of South Florida Lawrence (Larry) Schonfeld is Professor and Chair of the Department of Aging and Mental Health at the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute. Previously he served as Department Chair (1989-1992), Assistant Chair (1987-1989), and director of treatment programs for older adults with substance abuse problems or mental illness (1984-1989). He is Principal Investigator/Evaluator of the "Florida BRITE Project" (BRief Intervention and Treatment for Elders) under contract with the Florida Department of Children and Families Substance Abuse Program Office funded through a $14 million "SBIRT" grant from SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. BRITE is offered by 18 provider agencies throughout Florida to identify and serve elders with problems related to alcohol, prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, or illicit drug use. He is co-PI on a longitudinal study of depression in older adults known as the BRITE-Depression Project funded by NIMH (Amber Gum, P.I.) and co-PI on the Florida Elder Abuse Survey project funded by the National Institute of Justice (Laurence Branch, P.I.) to develop and test methods for detection of elder abuse and neglect. In addition to serving on national expert panels, Schonfeld is on the Board of Directors of the West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging and is a member of the Florida Substance Abuse Prevention Advisory Council. He is major professor for students in the Ph.D. Program in the School of Aging Studies and teaches Gerontological Research and Planning to master's level students. He is also Courtesy Professor in Psychology. Research interests include: substance abuse relapse prevention, elder abuse, and behavior problems in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. He also maintains the website for the Gerontological Society of America's interest group on "Aging, Alcohol, and Addictions."
